Racer Session #357 | Ian Christensen Quartet | January 15, 2017
Greetings, fans of the avant!
Without intention, January has seen back-to-back presentations rooted in the saxophone. We're happy to announce that they've all been great, and very different from the last! To conclude the saxophone marathon, we're very excited to bring Ian Christensen, friend of the session, up from a very snowy Portland, Oregon!
Ian draws inspiration as a composer and performer from jazz, rock, and improvised music. In his words, "I'm inspired by the works of Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Albert Ayler, Claude Debussy, and Elliot Smith, and striving to cultivate a new and honest approach, anchored by a strong melodic sensibility and a passion for the unknown."
Tomorrow we'll see his quartet, featuring Noah Bernstein on Alto Saxophone, Andrew Jones on Bass, and Jonas Oglesbee on Drums. This collective quartet aims for a compact and powerful sound, showcasing original music from all members.
