Racer Session #373 | Tom Varner | May 7, 2017
Greetings, Racers!
This weekend we are pleased to welcome french hornist Tom Varner back to the Racer stage. Tom is a huge and frequent presence in the Seattle creative music community, in addition to mentoring and teaching the next generation of cats at Cornish College of the Arts. One of the few french hornists in jazz community, Tom has prematurely reached historic status as a jazz hornist alongside such giants as John Zorn, Miles Davis, Jim McNeely, McCoy Tyner, and the Mingus Orchestra. It is an understatement to say that he is a hidden treasure of a bebop monster here in Seattle. Please join Tom, Neil Welch, Kate Olsen, and NY-based European trumpeter Thomas Heberer for a set of free improvisations this Sunday, and read a short message from him below:
"Greetings! This Sunday we will present a mixed improvised wind quartet set, then followed by the group joined by other great players from the Seattle/U Wash/Cornish improvised music community. I, Kate, Thomas and Neil will channel our love of players such as Steve Lacy, Thelonious Monk, and Evan Parker into music that will be fresh, knotty, tricky, transparent, a little nasty, but beautiful too. JOIN US!"
