A Project of Table & Chairs in Seattle, WA

Racer Session #493 | Max Kutner | October 20, 2019

The Racer Sessions occur every Sunday at Cafe Racer in Seattle, WA. Each week features a performance from a different artist or group, inspiring an improvised jam session afterwards.

This weekend we’re thrilled to host friend of the session and guitarist Max Kutner, visiting all the way from New York!

Max Kutner is a guitarist, composer and instructor originally from Las Vegas, NV. As an instrumentalist, Max's focus is on new works for the electric guitar as well as the promotion of electric guitar in new performance contexts. In addition to his numerous projects as a leader, he has worked alongside Mike Keneally, Sofia Gubaidulina, Ulrich Krieger, the former members of Oingo Boingo, The Grandmothers of Invention (Zappa alumni), Alphonso Johnson, Lili Haydn, Matt Darriau and many others. Presently, Max is also the lead guitarist of the Magic Band with John “Drumbo” French which performs the music of Captain Beefheart around the world, and he has previously taught guitar at California Institute of the Arts.

Max is no stranger to Racer, having previously presented with his group Evil Genius. This time around, Max is going solo and we can’t wait to see and here what he’s got for us. He will present his set this Sunday at 8pm, and the jam session will follow immediately after until 10pm! Please don’t miss it, we’ll see you there! In the mean time, some words from Max to get you inspired:

"Improvisation factors greatly in my understanding and practice of making music, expressing myself and also just living generally. It can't help but be the most honest avenue of presenting oneself because crucial portions of improvisatory practice are uncertain and this, I feel, is above notions of truth and authoritative posturing. I feel that any improvisation context is also striving for inclusivity and the sharing of complex ideas at the most personal level possible.

All that to say, it's the healthiest means of expressing oneself, both alone and communally. The goal for tonight thus is the healthiest living I know. I hope to share in many moments of life with everyone tonight."
