Neil Welch to Release New Album

The one and only Neil Welch will be releasing his third solo saxophone album on Table & Chairs this February. Neil has been working tirelessly on solo saxophone improvisations and pieces over the past few years. He has even started a project in which he records a new improvisation every day for all of 2013 — more on that later.

The new album is entitled 12 Tiny Explosions, and continues to develop the ideas and techniques that Neil has been working on. The album features succinct and composed pieces, including astonishing examples of Welch’s now familiar use of interlooping chords and clustered tones. Each track was carefully curated for the unique studio environment in which it was recorded, and was recorded in one single, un-edited take. Techniques include amplifying the mouthpiece itself and mic-ing specific tone holes in the body of the horn. The tracks were recorded in small batches using mic placement and the room as guides for the compositions. The result of 12 Tiny Explosions is a highly original statement from Welch and a true survey of his work throughout 2011. For those fascinated by Welch’s expressiveness as an improviser and composer, 12 Tiny Explosions is an essential next step in the discography of this important saxophonist.

The album release show will be held at the Chapel Performance space in Wallingford on February 15th. Neil will perform a set of solo saxophone music from this record and others. Admission will be on a sliding scale.

About Neil’s newest venture:

Neil has made it his goal for 2013 to record a different improvisation every day to hear the progression his thinking and playing makes over the coming months, and how it reflects changes in his life. He posts the recordings to Facebook — he got a Facebook just to do this project! — and to his website, along with a few sentences about the improvisation. Start listening now to catch up on the 31 recordings already up!
