A Project of Table & Chairs in Seattle, WA

Racer Session #553 | Kelsey Mines | Sunday November 6th, 2022

Hey, improvisers!

This Sunday we’re excited to be kicking off the month of November with a session presented by Kelsey Mines! Kelsey, a multi-hyphenate who makes her way through Seattle’s many intersecting music scenes as a bassist, vocalist, composer, educator, and improviser, recently released a new solo recording. Look Like (Relative Pitch Records) is a new excursion for Kelsey, her first solo release, which explores how listening to our on-going internal dialogue helps us conjure honest, outward expressions.

Kelsey has written a bit below to share her process with us - take a peek below and then find your way to Racer Sessions this Sunday at 7pm to check out this new music with us!

“For me, improvising is like walking down a winding path with fork after endless fork. The path asks, left or right? In or out? High or low? Yes or no? And with each answer, I present myself a new set of binary questions, branching into a sprawling, infinite tree. Infinite! So I want to creatively and curiously dig out walls and parameters that shape the tree, like trenches that direct flowing water.

Look Like is a collection of solo improvisations. I like to call them "solo-duets" because the parameter here is an internal dialogue between playing the bass and singing the voice. My presentation at this Racer Session is an extension of this process, the practice of maintaining an honest internal dialogue as constant and real as possible. The more I listen inward, artistically and humanly, the more I can be present and true in my expression outward.

Here we go!”
