Racer Session #498 | Noel Kennon | November 24, 2019
hello friends . This evening John Teske and I will perform music as a duo . Viola and Double bass
the program will consist of works from Antoine Beuger and a new collaborative composition by John and myself. . “Suffering : an american daydream”
"now is the moment to learn hope” by antoine beuger
the score opens with a quote from John Holloway's public address at the Rediscovering the Radical Conference, Liverpool, 2016
“Now is the moment to learn hope. Now, when there seems so little ground for hope; Now, when refugees and migrants are drowning in the sea; Now, when racism and fascism are surging in Europe and North America and elsewhere; Now, when even to mention hope seems like a sick joke or an insult to millions and millions of young people who face a life of unemployment, or sometimes worse ‐‐ employment! Now is the time to learn hope … not just to hope that everything will be alright. But to learn hope … hope as a way of thinking that opens paths to a different world.”
For the improvisational portion i would encourage everyone to incorporate silences /stillness and frenzied sound making . I would like to also encourage everyone to use this time on the stage not to re -say something they have already done or know ‘ works’ but to try things that you have not before . Very often i hear people trying to make something that resembles a music . I think this often makes just a shadow of memory . I would encourage everyone to explore the sounding experience in a way that is unknown .
Sounding is an act where one finds how deep a body of water goes by listening to how long the echo takes to come back . By doing this one can approximate how far down one could potentially go before hitting the bottom
Thank you all so much!
