Racer Session #499 | Kin of the Moon | Dec 1, 2019

Greetings Racers!

This Sunday we are pleased to present Kin of the Moon!

Kin of the Moon is an improvisation-centric, technology-friendly chamber music series incubated right here in Seattle's rich musical scene. Headed by violist/improviser Heather Bentley, composer/vocalist Kaley Lane Eaton, and flutist/improviser Leanna Keith - Kin of the Moon explores sonic rituals, promotes cross-pollination of genres, emphasizes the communicative power of specific performance locales and celebrates the creativity that multiplies itself through the collaboration of performers and composers.

In their own words, the artists of Kin of the Moon devote their lives to reaching higher vibrational levels through sound creation, and coming together out of a mutual love for improvising sounds, manipulating acoustic waves electronically, and worshiping the stage as a sacred location for transformation through sonic ritual, the three classically trained musicians of Kin of the Moon create a diverse body of work through their varied modes of soundcraft.

We’ve been long excited for a chance to host these killer musicians, and hope that you’ll join us for a night of deep listening and thoughtful improvising. Music starts right at 8pm, with collective improvisations to follow! Read on for words from KOTM’s Heather Bentley for what to expect this Sunday.

“Winter Walks on the Moon”

”Kin of the Moon recently performed Ewa Trebacz’s “Winter After Times of Fire” for the second time. It’s a massive ambisonic sound collage that we improvise with. This past time that we performed it, we ended up writing out some ideas on a couple of “parts” with timings related to events in the fixed media. It struck us that the roadmap of the parts could constitute an interesting piece on its own, so this Sunday at Racer Sessions we are going to extract our own performance and sub in some drones instead of the sound collage. Also, we’re going to stretch out the piece so instead of being the original fourteen minutes, it will be more like thirty-five minutes. In this way, some of the gestures will extend and stretch and possibly feel like a low gravity walk on the moon. We think that it will be less fire-like, but still kind of wintry. Hence the title Winter Walks on the Moon.

We are fascinated with things that imitate other things. We are fascinated with real things that imitate fake things that imitate real things. We are fascinated by derivations of things, things that comment on other things. Lots of things. Sound things. We invite folks to consider imitation in the jams that follow.

Thank you, Racer Sessions, for inviting us to curate. Racer Sessions is a cultural treasure."
